The BWB Tele-Salon is an effort to strengthen relationships within the Burning Man & BWB communities. It is a bi-monthly telephone conference call where BWB Chapters, Civic Leaders, and Community members can both present and listen in to conversations that matter. Hosted on the second saturday on rotating months, this call focuses on different projects, initiatives, and skills that are useful in community work. If you’re interested in speaking at an upcoming Tele-Salon please e-mail: chicago (at) burnerswithoutborders (dot) org
Tom LaPorte and Athena Demos will be hosting our first talk:
“Border Crossings: Tunnels & Sunlight”
Does civic engagement mean we can’t be subversive anymore? From Chicago come tales and lessons of culture hopping, coming to love bureaucrats, and saving the earth with mirth. Tom LaPorte (Media Mecca, External Relations Team, BMIR, Black Rock Ranger, and Burners Without Borders) will regale you until you start wishing there was any sort of border right nearby.
About Tom LaPorte
Tom LaPorte was raised by wolves in a clearing in the forest. Unable to send him to college, the wolves freed him and he somehow got a B.S. in Speech-Communications/Radio-TV. He spent 25 years in radio– mostly in all news CBS stations in Chicago, before going to work for the City of Chicago as an Assistant Commissioner of Water Management. He has been a burner since 2004. He’s not convinced Secretariat was a real horse, but he does believe Oswald acted alone. He can catch flying starlings in his teeth, but has not done so since he heard about PETA.
About Athena Demos
Athena Demos is the executive director of the Los Angeles League of Arts and the LA regional coordinator for Burning Man. She also coordinates the local Burners Without Borders educational school garden projects along with many other community activities. Her passion lies in bringing people to communities and communities to people.
We hope you’ll join us for this special presentation, and we encourage you to bring your questions.
