Burning Man June Flambe Lounge: CARNIVAL OF CULTS
Save the date & Call for Participation!
Saturday, June 15th, 2013
9pm to 3:30am
At The CULTure Factory, 525 Harrison St, San Francisco, a 21+ over venue

Artists, theme camps, performers and DJs wanting to participate in this event-ing of community and creativity should email flambelounge (at) burningman (dot) com

CARNIVAL OF CULTS Theme: Some wonder if Burning Man is a cult. If we are, then we are a DIY cult where members are encouraged to think for themselves and wash their own brains! For this evening we invite you to create your own imaginative, playful, satiric, retro-absurd or future envisioning cults. We encourage you to dress and act the part, create midway games, processional groups and bizarre rituals to inspire followers to join you.

Bring your cult of personality and beliefs to life in a collaborative and creative manner. You might create a roving theme camp cult of pious platypi seeking to recruit new members for its art colony. Perhaps you are a closet alien cult leader on a galactic campaign to save the Cosmos! Prepare YOUR message and indoctrination ritual! We welcome your creative and collaborative interpretations of this playful and poignant theme—whether you are a cult of one or many. It’s up to you!

To bring your art, theme camp or perform, email flambelounge (at) burningman (dot) com today! Any and all are welcome whether thematic or not.

He is going to dj sets based on 8 bit legacy video game music between the live sets, also chip set based.
Happy Earth Day! Here is a fun project from long time burner Scott London:

My name is Scott London. I created an organization called “Revitalize.” Our goal is to bring the collective conciseness of Burning Man to the outside world.

Our Mission is to take one of the principles of burning man, “Leave no trace” and use it to educate kids across the country on the importance of recycling plastic by recycling their TOOTHBRUSH.

The Toothbrush is an everyday item that many of us forget is often made from plastic. We are asking schools to participate in collecting old used toothbrushes to help us build a communal art project.

It’s estimated that over ONE BILLION toothbrushes make their way to landfills annually and takes several hundred years for these plastic toothbrushes to decompose into our soil. We are now in a full-blown plastic epidemic threatening our environment. Lets use our collective power in putting plastic in its proper place through recycling.

We have created a year round sustainable program for every school that participates in our art recycling project. It’s a great program where your school earns .02 cents for every piece of plastic they collect and recycle. In addition, our organization will be giving away a $5,000 grant to one school through a collection contest.

We need your help in spreading this campaign to your regional group of burners who have a child in school or have a direct relationship with a school. We’re looking for as many schools as possible to participate.

If there’s anyone who’s interested in getting their schools involved, please E-mail us at bmtoothbrush (at) gmail (dot) com to start the process of registering. The process is simple. We’ll walk you through each step. Once your school is registered, they’ll receive a ReVITALize bin to start collecting toothbrushes.

Thank you for your help and participation.

Scott London, The ReVITALize Team
bmtoothbrush (at) gmail (dot) com

Do you know of a school that would like to help out? Email Scott at bmtoothbrush (at) gmail (dot) com and get them set up with a collection bin!

The person writing the article clearly thought the man was mad. How could he get anything done? The key according to Adam Grant is being efficient and organized about it. He takes zero time deciding if he should help or not and uses that time to help. Sounds pretty cool to me.

From childhood people always told me it doesn’t work that way. You can’t give away your opportunities, you have to compete, you need to win or you will lose. Never seemed right to me, just ignored it. But I’ve always had this sneaking suspicion perhaps they were right since I’m not exactly an entrepreneurial maven.

My impulse when I’m offered an opportunity is to call everyone I know who would be into it and invite them to do it too. I tend to follow that impulse even when I know it will make it harder for me to get the part, the job, the recognition. I don’t think I’m doing it for altruistic reasons, I think I’m just scared to go alone. I am also probably scared to succeed, but that’s another post altogether! I’m not sure if I’m a Giver, a Matcher or a Taker…you tell me what you think.

What struck me about Grant’s tome (heh) was the part about why people do things for others. Some do it to get something in return. That’s not gifting, that’s barter.

Grant’s book, incorporating several decades of social-science research on reciprocity, divides the world into three categories: givers, matchers and takers. Givers give without expectation of immediate gain; they never seem too busy to help, share credit actively and mentor generously. Matchers go through life with a master chit list in mind, giving when they can see how they will get something of equal value back and to people who they think can help them. And takers seek to come out ahead in every exchange; they manage up and are defensive about their turf. Most people surveyed fall into the matcher category — but givers, Grant says, are overrepresented at both ends of the spectrum of success: they are the doormats who go nowhere or burn out, and they are the stars whose giving motivates them or distinguishes them as leaders.

We’ve all seen the matchers at the burns, you have to give them something in order to get what they are gifting. Is that gifting? Not really. But it’s better than nothing! And it also protects them from the Takers who have no intention of contributing anything other than receiving a gift.

There are a lot of solutions to social problems that only work when you have mostly Givers. The suspended coffee concept for example, it’s amazing. But it wouldn’t work in a poor neighborhood where most of the people in the cafe can barely afford their own coffee. It works great in an affluent area where there are only a few homeless people and most of the customers have disposable income.

The amazing thing is you can actually get better at it.

Grant believes that in terms of giving, we all have the same muscle; it’s just that he and the other givers in his book have exercised it more. In “Give and Take,” he cites a study that found that most people lose physical strength after enduring a test of will, like resisting chocolate-chip cookies when they are hungry. Typically, the study’s subjects could squeeze a handgrip for only 25 seconds after an exercise in willpower. But one group distinguished itself, squeezing the grip for 35 seconds after the test of will. They were people who were on the giving end of the other-directedness scale. “By consistently overriding their selfish impulses in order to help others, they had strengthened their psychological muscles, to the point where using willpower for painful tasks was no longer exhausting,” writes Grant of the study, conducted by researchers at Northwestern University. - Susan Dominus

This is a concept I am loving. The idea of it being a muscle you can strengthen is stellar. I have read the same thing about losing your temper. They suggested using your non-dominant hand to do daily tasks so that you are used to low level frustration and overcoming it. Then when larger frustrations come at you the set point for what boils you over is in a different place.

It also reminds me of a girlfriend in New York. She would give a dollar to anyone who asked her for spare change. She didn’t want to be in a position to be deciding who deserved and needed the money and who didn’t. And although she was working poor and barely making it herself she felt she was in a better position then they were and it was her duty to share what she had with those who had less. My solution was to not give money to anyone because they scared me and I was broke. But I still got coffee at Starbucks. The sticker ridden coffee cup I carry today came from a Starbucks in Manhattan in the late nineties. Now it’s a stainless monument to the Black Rock Rangers and the Critical Tits ride. I spent a good chunk of my student loan money on that mug, it was not cheap. I have lost it and it has always come back to me. To you it looks like a status symbol. To me it’s a reminder.

My point my friends, my fiends, is this. What are you giving? and what do you expect in return?

What do you get out of it? The giving or the receiving, both have value. A gift given with no one to receive it with love, respect, and gratitude is a sad gift indeed. The value is in the exchange.

At the conference Larry spoke and at the end he talked about his hat. Said he hardly wore it anymore, thought it looked better on just about anyone else. I don’t know about that, him and the hat are synonymous in some ways at this point, but it makes a great metaphor. He tossed it out into the crowd saying he was passing the hat on to us now. Clovis caught it, he’s from Flipside, and then a neat thing happened. Clovis tried it on, mugged for us all, then tossed it on to someone new.

This went on for a while. The hat moved around the room like a beachball at a day on the green, each one trying it on and then passing it on, it took on its own life separate from the man who made it iconic. As a symbol of a shared vision we all took it on. Then gave it away.

As the Burning Man Network grows the task of curating its flavor falls to us all. Who is to say if it’s within the ten principles or not? You are. The view from under the hat is a perspective of some imagined collective. We have internalized the recipe and we are gifting it out to the world.

Provide a container for the experience. Invite the community to come together and create something to share with each other. Be safe enough to be sustainable but still crazy enough to have fun. Make stuff. Let it go. Walk away knowing you have it inside you now. Rinse and repeat.

As I begin to process all of it I’d like to share my impressions from the service project we did on Sunday with Carmen Mauk from Burners Without Borders.

As we struggle to overcome our drugged out hippies rave dancing in the desert reputation (who do they think built all that stuff out there in the desert anyways!) finding service organizations willing to accept our assistance is apparently sometimes a challenge. Not everyone assumes we are there to help anything other than our outward appearance, but thanks to the diligent work of Shalonda Ingram from Nursha Project the Prescott-Joseph Center for Community Enhancement was willing to take a chance on a rag tag bunch of burners. Ariel Vegosen from Gender Blenders and Shalonda, along with Neptune and the rest of their crew, welcomed us to their end of Oakland and toured us around. We checked out some graffiti art on the way to tour the Crucible, and then got down to brass tacks getting our hands dirty and changing minds.

I really appreciated the way we not only did some yard work and helped clean things up but we also talked about our experience, and what it means to be in service. Having time to process made it more meaningful, and Shalonda really kept pointing us back to our own process – why are we here? what are we getting out of it? can we just be in service without taking our issues out on the people we are there to serve? Making it not all about you can be harder than you think…your million questions about what it’s like to be black and living in poverty in Oakland isn’t really the point. The person you are asking those questions to isn’t there to represent their race, creed or income. You can do all that, just not at the same time, and it’s important to remember the point. Clean up the leaves and make it nice. The other stuff is secondary, and you can’t let it get in the way.

That goes in both directions. The people we were there to serve at the Prescott Center were also focused on the task at hand. They were not there to prove a point, they gracefully accepted the help we offered without any assumptions about why we needed to do that. In a place that has people in all states of being cycle through on an endless loop of humanity, to receive or provide services, they are still open. That’s the miracle.

What we did that day was simple enough. We arrived to the place, we cleaned up the back yard, we left. Now when the audience in their nice dresses and pressed slacks sit down to see the show they won’t get pollen all over their outfit. The fourteen Burners who arrived there got to feel good about helping out where they are needed. We began a relationship with a service organization, one we can build on and learn from, which is very valuable. We didn’t solve any big problems, no huge plan in place. Just jumping in and getting stuff done. That was my big lesson for the day. Sometimes you don’t have to know what comes next, just take the first step.

The next step for the Prescott Center is the August Wilson Seven Guitars series on June 28th through July 7th, 2013. If any of you are interested in helping out let me know and I’ll connect you with the organizers. They are very open to Burners helping out, and they also have some great events going on. If people are interested to attend let me know and we can organize a bus down to the show.

I’m working on getting some opportunities lined up for us to do similar service days here in Sonoma County. If anyone has a connection to the Centro Laboral de Graton I’m seeking a Spanish speaking Burner partner. That’s the other thing I learned last Sunday. I don’t actually have to have a plan in place to begin. I have a will to help out, and I’m going to find people who understand the situation and let them be a part of creating the plan. So if you are connected to the migrant workers and can help out please contact me at northbay (at) burningman (dot) com because I need a partner to get this party started. Bilingual Spanish would be great as I am not conversational.

More to come on the conference for sure. Very inspiring! xoxo RLL

We are seeking an artist to create an art piece to commemorate our ten year anniversary, which is October 10, 2013. The piece could be simply an art piece or, ideally, a piece that is both art and serves a functional purpose, such as a fabric art piece that also provides sound dampening in our common house or a garden sculpture piece that also provides support/trellising in our organic garden.

The art piece could be installed outdoors in the many common spaces on our property or in our Common House, which houses our laundry facilities, guest rooms, kid’s room, dining room and kitchen. We expect the piece to be appropriate to the location – i.e. weather protected, non-toxic if indoors, etc.

The budget for this project is $2000-$5000. We will provide a deposit in good faith with the balance due upon installation.

How to submit a proposal

Interested artists should submit the following information no later than May 1st to: Ellen Gordon at glassln (at) sonic (dot) net. A visit may be scheduled to see potential installation site options prior to submission. Please email to set up an appointment. If visiting, please bring your portfolio or information about other projects you have done.

1. A proposal describing the art piece with sketches and or photos of representative work as appropriate. 2. A firm estimate of fees to be charged and a timeline for completion and installation. 3. Qualifications and/or resume that explains your experience as an artist and/or with other similar projects. 4. Names, phone numbers and email address of 2 people/organizations who have been your clients during the last 2 years, whom we can call on as references.

Please feel free to share this proposal with other artists you think might be interested and let us know to whom you have forwarded this RFP so we may follow up.
